library. The intent of the document is to present a sound and realistic
template of the key issues involved in negotiating a license to acquire or
use digital content, specifically as it relates to the world of Federated
Authentication & Authorization. New REFEDS entity categories are involved

Since last FIM4L newsletter (June) we cleared up comments and add some additional changes. Most catching perhaps is that we changed the two configuration options 4.a and 4.b, from "Transitory Access" and "Personalized Access" to: "Anonymous Access" and "Pseudonymous Access". This is done to align with REFEDS<https://wiki.refeds.org/display/ENT/Entity-Categories+Home> entity categories, named: Anonymous- and Pseudonymous Authorization.

Dear all,
Seamless Access Contract Language Working Group with both library and
publishers representatives led by Jason Griffey from NISO released Entity
Category Use Case Scenarios document for comments. The goal of the document
is to outline the various use cases in order to determine the overlap
between user access, authentication and authorization, attribute release,
and entity categories used in the federated authentication communication
between the Identity Provider and the Service Provider. These use cases
will be used to ground the contract language in real world examples.

*ABOUT THIS MEETING*
Collaboration between ORCID and the research/education community has grown
since ORCID's launch in late 2012:
- Federations lead ORCID consortia of institutions
- Academic libraries rely on ORCID iDs to attribute, catalog and
quantify scholarly communications outputs
- Research institutions use ORCID iDs to more accurately link
research contributors
- ORCID sign-in has been considered as an IdP of Last Resort for
research collaboration tools
- Unique Institutional credentials have been linked to over 320,000 ORCID
accounts
- ORCID iDs are included in the eduPerson schema
Conversations happen globally among ORCID, federation operators, library
and research organizations, practitioners, software providers, and
standards committees, though rarely over the entirety of this group at the
same time. During this meeting, we convene to consider strategic topics
that involve the ORCID platform or iDs, and deepen collaboration among the
ORCID and these communities.

Towards a second version of FIM4L recommendations
We are working on a second version<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fae_IDch-wOkgnBD_3MaZCHOsQ7pLxzXvl7h7Vk…> of FIM4L recommendations. Comments are more than welcome. It's open for "anyone with the link" to comment. (FIM4L members have/can get edit rights, please let me know.)
The new version will be aligned with the new entity categories: FIM4L principle 4.A "transitory access" will meet REFEDS Anonymous Authorisation <https://refeds.org/category/anonymous> and FIM4L principle 4.B "personalized access" will meet REFEDS Pseudonymous Authorisation<https://refeds.org/category/pseudonymous>.
Especially 4.B is rewritten and the biggest change perhaps is that we introduced an "opt-out" option to not release a persistent identifier, while having the 4.B configuration in place. This enables us to recommend 4.B as the preferred configuration.
Other
We<https://libereurope.eu/working-group/liber-fim4l-working-group/members/> now have every two weeks a meeting of FIM4L on Tuesdays 16:00 hr, CEST. Rob (Duke University) and Ken (Internet2) and Heather (Seamless Access) joined our meetings and we talked about CAR<https://spaces.at.internet2.edu/display/CAR/CAR%3A+Consent-informed+Attribu…> software. CAR could be beneficial for implementing user consent on attribute release. Next meeting the second version of recommendations is on the agenda. If you would like to join, please let me know.

On Mai, 20 the German Research Foundationy (Deutsche
Forschungsgesellschaft, DFG, one of the most influencial research
funding bodies in Germany) published a paper on "Data tracking in
research: aggregation and use or sale of usage data by academic
publishers"

with following contents:
1. Description of the current situation
2. The transformation of the major publishers and their relationshipwith
the academic community
2.1 Consequences of the transformation of publishers into data analytics
businesses
3. Types of Data mining
3.1 Third Party Data through Microtargeting
3.2 Bidstream Data and port scanning
3.3 Publisher spyware
4. Conclusion
Some sentences from the conclusion:
"Potentially, research tracking of this kind can fundamentally
contradict academic freedom and informational self-determination. It can
endanger scientists and hinder the freedom of competition in the field
of information provision. For this reason, scholars and academic
institutions must become aware of the problem and clarify the legal,
technical and ethical framework conditions of their information supply
–not least so as to avoid involuntarily violating applicable law, but
also to ensure that academics are appropriately informed and protected."
I think that in the light of such developments, our work gets even more
important.
